People Wouldn’t Be Mean To Others, If They Only Knew…

Do you ever wonder why “people” (in general) treat others badly either offensively or defensively. Offensively is they make the first move causing the issue while the defensive player will only attack when attacked upon. This is a very interesting subject because depending on how you look at the situation, you can either react “hotheadedly” and get mad or take the time to figure out why a person either made you mad or got mad at you. I have seen people react about a situation in one scenario, change the parameters a little bit and that same person will react a completely different way.

For example: Let’s say you’re driving down the street and another car flies around you doing 30 mph over the speed limit in that area. Some will get mad and call him an asshole, while others might calmly process that it is not worth it to get mad. That is the obvious difference between reactions. However, put two different people in that situation and tell them prior to the experiment that someone was hit by a car and they were being taken to the hospital to save their life. If they only knew that vital information, they would understand why the person had caused the problem and they would change their opinion. The point is that until you know all the details, you should try to see the situation from a different angle…I try.

I guess this is just one of my psychology rants!

Comstar Completes First WiMAX Network In Armenia

Posted at: 11:47 pm by Timothy Haroutunian

Back in July, Armenia completed a WiMAX network that was carried out by Comstar

The 3.6-3.8 GHz frequency range was allocated for the network on the territory of 9 regions of the Republic of Armenia. The network has a high data transmission capacity and enables the provision of a full range of telecommunications services, such as data transmission, digital telephony, high speed internet access, conference calling, creating virtual private networks (IP VPN), for residential and corporate subscribers. - source

Now when I go back to Armenia, I should have a better internet connection from 2001. It was good that I had internet that the government provided us, it wasn’t much. Armenia is a great country, it just needs a little help financially.

Woman Died While Watching TV, 42 Years Ago

“Hedviga Golik made herself a cup of tea and sat down to watch some television in her hometown of Zagreb, Croatia. Sadly, she died in her chair. This was in 1966. She was just found, 42 years later, in her time capsule mausoleum where she’s been sitting ever since. She never finished her tea.” - source.

They say that she were reported missing, but no one checked her apartment. I find that hard to believe since she would have needed to pay rent or the landlord would have come in sooner. I wonder if it was similar to a condo where you take out a loan and she paid it all off, no one would have checked I guess. I guess it is a unverified rumor going around the internet, either way it is a interesting (funny) story.

Media Temple Web Hosting, Armenian As A Language

Yesterday, I saw a tweet from John Resig, creator of jQuery, that stated that he will be moving all of the jQuery files/data to Media Temple. Media Temple is a Tier IV web hosting facility in El Segundo, CA that features one the most advanced technology used for their data center.

The space is in approximately 7,000 square feet currently with room for expansion up to 40,000 square feet. The center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. On-site armed security is around-the-clock. They monitor the alarm system and security cameras that are on all perimeter points of ingress/egress to the building. Bulletproof security station and shipping/receiving areas with a Biometric security system are also in place. Our personnel require authorized escorted visitations. 24” raised floor manufactured by Maxcess covering every square foot of our cages, MDF and Network Operation Center.

When I was reading up about them, it says:
“English is our primary language. We also speak Spanish, Japanese, Swedish, Korean, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Armenian and a few other languages.” - source

That’s awesome, but out of all the other languages, Italian or German would be next on the list, I would think. It must be since they are located about 30 miles away from Glendale, CA which has the largest concentration of Armenian-American population. Just thought that was pretty funny.

Speaking of jQuery, I am heading to the jQuery Conference in Boston in the am

First Presidential Debate In 2008: Obama "Beats" McCain

Posted at: 11:42 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Entertainment and News

Tonight was the first debate of the 2008 Presidential Elections and it went very well…for Barack Obama. Obama was clear on his stances, even when John McCain made the country question them. Obama answered his questions very well and made McCain fumble with his words a lot. McCain also sounded very nervous like he was getting caught in lies or that he didn’t have a rebuttal.

John McCain kept bringing up the “care for veterans” and “war in Iraq“, but not really about anything else. I see nothing wrong with the giving the proper care for veterans, who deserve it, but I have a problem with spending $10 billion per month in Iraq while they have an $80 billion surplus. John McCain is good at one thing and that is to take the middle part of the country and dangle a shiny object in front of them and start telling them a bunch of lies about Barack Obama and hope they listen. I am not a political analyst, but I care about the country and the current path that it is taking. If I don’t know what something is, I research it. Whether the research is done online, in a book, on the tv or even respectively discuss it among friends. One of my friends posted something similar on twitter. If you don’t care enough to pay attention and/or don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain.

Obama said he is not going to raise, even lower, the taxes for 95% of the working families. If you make less than $250,000/year, you will not see anymore taxes, everyone over that will see a raise. If you make $250,000/year, you can afford more than a family of 6 who might not have their home anymore because the parents got laid off due to the economy. The single parent who works two/three jobs so that their children can have a decent chance at accomplishing something wonderful in their life. John McCain is against this, because he is part of that since he is worth around $25 million himself. Obama wants to close all of the loopholes in the business tax and give that money to people who need it. This country is being run by the rich and portrayed as the rich, however, working families are struggling to pay the mortgage and the medical bills. It isn’t right for some families to choose between paying for the house, eating properly or send their children to get an education. I am not talking about the people who screwed up their lives because of drugs, gambling or alcohol. I am talking about the families who work to try and get by and then get laid off because the company can’t afford them anymore due to the economic crisis.

Barack Obama brought up education for children, universal health care and independence from foreign oil. He explained that each of those are going to be on his top priority list because that is the change America needs. If we want to be seen as the most educated country in the world, then we need to help students have a chance to go to college who couldn’t because of money. Get Federal Aid to those who need it and not those who “earn” it. If someone works hard and get good grades, they deserve scholarships and some grants, however, if kids are cheating through high school because they didn’t get a good education as a child, it leaves out the people who want to go to college and get more of an education. Universal health care will help Americans who are out of work or do not have work paid health insurance to be able to get basic care. Our dependence on foreign oil needs to be dealt with and Obama has a plan for that within 10 years while McCain is talking about 2030 for his nuclear power. Yes, offshore drilling would have a little benefit, but you can’t replace new/renewable energy options with drilling. Obama has a better plan to lead this country than John McCain and I believe that Obama will come out on top.

An instant poll taken right after the debate giving Obama an edge on the current results. Since this debate was mainly about the economy, the poll showed that 68% of random undecided votes said that Obama would handle the economy better than McCain at 41%. Also for their opinion about Barack Obama after the debate, 46% said better, 46% said no change and 7% said worse. That’s a 39% increase than what he had before, and John McCain wanted to cancel the debate. I knew Obama would win if the debate happened.

This map displays the current predictions as of time of post.
9/27/08 Predicted Presidential Voting

The map below shows what would happen if New Hampshire and Florida vote with Barack Obama, he would win the election. However, I am not getting these facts out of thin air. In a story posted in mid-July, Florida’s Democratic registrations shot up 106,000 in a 5 month span compared to the Republican’s registration at 16,000. More people are agreeing with Obama than with John McCain. Florida is 27 votes which would leave Obama four votes shy of the presidency. Any other state would also guarantee the election, but the easiest might be New Hampshire. Even though it is a “southern” thinking state, in 2004, NH voted democrat and gave all their votes to John Kerry. There is a possibility that NH could turn to Obama and this election would be “over”.

Until the next debate remember, know what’s going on in the country to make “educated” decisions about your opinions.

Zemanta Is My New Favorite Tool As A Blogger

Posted at: 11:31 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Tech and Web

I stumbled upon Zemanta the other day and have grown to love this blogging tool. Personally, I have it as a Wordpress plugin which works out well. It appears to the right of the area in which you write the content of your post. The plugin grabs your content and pulls out keywords to search the internet against. If it finds anything, it will place images that relate to the content that you are writing about. Most of these images are from flickr, other photosharing software and sites. You can click on the photo and it will automatically place it into your content.

Zemanta also provides two other key components to this tool. Below the posting area, links will appear that relate to your content as well. You can click on the boxes that appear and see where they are coming from, for example: Wikipedia, main site, imdb, maps, youtube and more. Below those boxes in the tags section is a set of tags that are auto generated based on your content. You click the tag and it adds the tags for you.

This is a great tool because, it is very easy to be lazy while blogging and not want to link to sites or add tags, but this makes it a lot easier and faster. I would highly recommend it to any blogger, however, if you have a lot of firefox addons (depending on the addon), it might slow down your blogging because it uses all your CPU usage. I have 2Gb of memory in my laptop and it ran slow with one or more of my firefox plugins. Just informing my readers of what I experienced. :)

John McCain Postpones Friday’s Debate; Can’t Multitask

Posted at: 11:40 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Entertainment and News

John McCain called to postpone this Friday’s debates because of the $700 billion bailout. In the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, he wants to focus on the economy…which he should. However, why can’t he do what Obama is doing and multitask. If you want to be President of the United States, you need to be able to multitask. McCain, is your mind too old that you can’t remember more than one item on an agenda? You are 72 years old and trying to run for President just because you were a war hero and don’t forget the whole POW thing. Obama states “It’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person will be the next president,” Obama said in Clearwater, Florida. “It is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once. It’s more important than ever to present ourselves to the American people.” - source

Just like most of the people in this country, I want to hear what the next President of the United States is going to do about the depression like economic conditions. Obama wants to explain himself, why can’t you John? Why can’t you tell us what your plan is going to entail? Is it because you realize that Obama has a plan that will help our economy and you don’t want to admit it?

I was watching WBZ News Boston and they went to a “Main Street” in Milford, MA and talked to small business owners in a small town to see how the economy is affecting them. An “expensive” hairstylist said that since “getting your hair done” is a luxury, it has been cut out of most people’s budgets so they can pay for gas, heating and mortgage payments. If she has no business, she doesn’t make money and that money isn’t being put back into circulation to help the economy. See the chart below.

Economic Cycle

I’m not sure what McCain’s reason is for postponing the debate, but it certainly can’t be due to the economy. Obama wants to continue the debate on Friday and he also is flying down to Washington DC tomorrow to meet with George Bush and John McCain about the crisis and how to deal with it. I really hope John McCain decides to go to the debate, because I want to see how he answers unscripted questions from a very tough panel.

New American Ambassador To Armenia Arrived Recently

Posted at: 11:55 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: History and Mythology, Rants and Randomness

Last week, newly appointed Ambassor to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch arrived in Yerevan where she will command her post.

Armenian-American groups have been seeking to force the Bush administration to change its policy on the 1915 incidents, but Yovanovitch clearly adhered to the US line of refusing to label the incidents as “genocide” at her confirmation hearing in the Senate. Last year the White House withdrew its nomination of career diplomat Richard Hoagland after one lawmaker blocked it in an objection to that policy. The post had remained vacant for two years. Armenia, with the backing of its diaspora, claims that up to 1.5 million of its kin were slaughtered in orchestrated killings in 1915. Turkey rejects the claims, saying that 300,000 Armenians along with at least as many Turks died in civil strife that emerged when the Armenians took up arms for independence in eastern Anatolia.

Washington has had no full-time ambassador in Yerevan since May 2006 and has attached great importance to sending Yovanovitch there at a time of increasing Russian influence in the region and a worsening conflict with Iran over its alleged development of nuclear arms, officials said at the time.

The last ambassador was removed by George Bush because he openly called the “killings” a genocide. Bush is an idiot.
