Jon Lester Throws No Hitter At Fenway Park Tonight
Didn’t I just write about a Red Sox no hitter last season? Well, here’s another one for you. Jon Lester threw a no hitter tonight against the Kansas City Royals in a 130 pitch effort. It was the first no hitter since Clay Buchholz pitched one on September 1, 2007. Lester was only the 5th left hander to pitch a no hitter at Fenway Park with Mel Parnell being the last Red Sox pitcher to do it in 1956. Jason Varitek set a major league record for catching the most No Hitters at four.
With no score going into the third inning, the Red Sox put some points on the board to give Jon Lester some breathing room (even though he didn’t need it). JD Drew scored on a double play RBI from Lugo making it 1-0. With the bases loaded, Manny walked bringing in another run. Still with two outs, Lowell hit a pop fly to the 2nd baseman which should have ended the inning, but he mis-judged the wind and the ball fell bringing in two more runs making it 4-0. Finally, Youk hit a ground rule double to bring in Manny (5-0).
In the 4th inning, the Royals came as close as they would come to getting a hit. With two outs, a Royals player (not important :-)) hit a ball to Jacoby Ellsbury in center field that was falling fast. Ellsbury dove and made the play just before it hit the ground ending the inning and the “threat”. In the 6th, Varitek hit a two run home run to put the Sox up 7-0.
In the 9th, Jon Lester closed out the game with his first complete game and first no hitter. Congrats!
