13 Little Things That Make A Geek Happy
*UPDATE: I changed this list up based on a comment from Matt
This list is great because it is very true due to 9 out of the 13 make me very happy. How many can you account for? Semi-Source – I have changed some of them that do not relate to me. Thanks Boyd.
- My gmail notifier lights up. It could be a friend asking if I want to meet up for a drink later or a nigerian prince who has a financial proposition I simply can’t refuse. Either way those few moments before I actually read the message always fill me with a bit of euphoria.
- API’s – I know that it is fun to screen scape websites and collect information that you can manipulate yourself, but it is a lot better when they give you the information legally and you can write more productive code. Ex: Flickr, Facebook, USPS, etc. (get the hint ESPN)
- Someone submits something I wrote to digg. Sometimes it makes the digg homepage, sometimes it doesn’t. Either way it’s flattering to have something I wrote submitted by someone else who thought it was digg-worthy.
- A new referrer pops up in bSuite. Whatever analytics you use on your website, it’s always nice to see someone spreading the link love.
- Seeing something in the real world that correlates to something in the geek world. Ever have a total ring up as 404 or 13.37 and enjoy a bit of silent amusement? Yeah, me too.
- When the shipping status changes to “on truck for delivery.” I buy a lot of stuff online, this is the final step before my package arrives and it pretty much makes me feel like I’m windsurfing on a sea of spectacular. Is work frustrating today? Did my upstairs neighbor keep me up all night by making noises that sounded like they were giving birth to an elephant? No worries, I’ve got some awesome shit coming in the mail – all is forgiven.
- Someone posts a real comment on one of my blog entries. Hell yeah, I blogged and someone responded without trying to sell me ringtones. Fan-freakin-tastic.
- That little green icon in the lower left of my browser indicating that my page validates. W3C all up in this biznatch – oh how I love that green icon. I wish you were a nightlight beside my bed.
- My code works perfectly on the first try. It’s rare, but it happens. Usually I’ll triple-check to make sure it’s actually working.
- Seeing binary code written on a shirt and knowing what it says, laughing to yourself and then laughing out loud because only another geek would understand.
- Hearing a co-worker say “for the win” or “for the loss” in basic conversations. That’s it…no other reasons
- Having an idea about a project that you want to work on and then someone else launches the exact idea but right around the same time that you thought of it. For most people, that would be upsetting, but it just means that you get all of the functionality and can work on another project. It makes me happy.
- Technorati and Alexa Ranking that increases each week. I like to see my numbers jump greatly over time which supports my theory that people actually read my blog.

Awesome list, Tim.
I love #5…I’m prone to plaster a grin on my face when I see 1337 & 404 too.
#6 FTW!
You should have customized the list for you, though, as #11, 12, 13, (2 and 10?) don’t completely apply to you, right?

I changed a bunch of them after the fact to make them relate more to me and I think you will like the list more

I hate it when #12 happens. Everything else generally makes me happy.

On the lines of # 5: A neighbor has a license plate “CMF 1494″. Any good geek knows it has to be a custom plate, right? Citrix Metaframe, port 1494. And here I thought he was a truck-driving Redneck.

Posted: Apr 23rd, 2007 at 5:42 pm
I used to go to a doctor that was in suite 404. I always had the damnedest time finding it…

Hey, this is Boyd from Mingle2. Congrats on making digg but next time could you please link to the original source at the top of your post? I know you made some modifications, but it’d just be nice if you made the link to the original a little more visible
Thanks!
PS. I totally agree with your #13

I love 12 cause it happened to me the other day EXACTLY like that. I had this whole idea for a webpage for collaborating musicians online. I was so upset cause i knew i wasn’t gonna get around to setting anything up. I then started explaining my idea to a friend who says, “Oh like Indaba Music?” After i saw it was exactly what i had been thinking, he says, “Don’t you hate it when someone else thinks of something and does it first?” “Nope.” I said gleefully and sunk my teeth into it.

there’s a greater sense of enjoyment in getting that item you ordered through the mail then in actually going to the store and buying it and brining it home, because the time that you have to wait for the package makes it all the better..and you think of how great the product is regardless of what it turns out to be. Theirs no sense of waiting when you just go out and buy it ..hard to explain

FYI, it’s not a “Semi-Source” when you copy 69% almost word for word. It’s plagiarism.

Eric,
If you notice an above comment from the source and as long as the source was near the top, he was alright with what I did.

Follow up to the Citrix comment earlier….
On my daily commute I always look at license plates. It’s AMAZING how many file extensions you recognize…ini,php,7z,asp,,,,,,,
(Also 666 always makes me think…’Can you request a different license plate due to religious objections?’….and it makes me all happy inside to know they are probably pissing off a lot of really religious drivers
)

Loved the comment about the shipping bit! The ‘on the truck’ update is probably the best part of buying online.

Great list. “On truck for delivery” is my favorite too. Nothing beats reading that. Well…maybe one thing beats that. When you forgot you ordering something and get to be surprised when it shows up…that’s nice too.

Nothing makes me happier than logging in and seeing “Out for delivery”.

My girlfriends address is 1337 and I smile every time I order food to the house.

lol i dunno if most people even notice license plates. I do but I’m rarely in a car and someone else points one out before me. I dunno maybe I’m just too quick on the draw.
