Lent: Poon Paregentan (1st Sunday)

Armenian Prayer

The Meaning of Lent

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.” (Matthew 4:12.)

This is the Biblical basis of the period called Lent, given to us to prepare for the Feast of Feasts, the Resurrection. Just as we need time to prepare for any great event in life, we need time to make ourselves ready to participate in the blessed and wondrous event commemorated by Easter.

Lent gives us the opportunity to:
*Renew our commitment to God
*Reflect on our lives and be directed by God
*Respond to Jesus’ call for love and mercy toward all of God’s children

Lent is a special time in the year when we guard against worldly distractions and make room for the Holy Spirit to fill us. During Lent we go into our own inner wilderness –caused by sins, spiritual laziness, and empty vanity. There we confront the devil. Through prayer, fasting, Bible reading, and self-examination we gain the strength to work at being more loving, humble, and gentle.

After a successful Lenten journey, we should each be able to say “Be gone, Satan.” We also will find ourselves hungry after this long effort; hungry for the only thing that can truly fill the place we have worked hard to clear: the beautiful fruit of the Resurrection, which is Life Everlasting with Christ our Lord.

The heart of Lent is inner penitence and reconciliation with God. Begin with self-examination and inner healing. Set aside this period to examine and evaluate your life as a Christian. Spiritual renewal is possible only if you’re willing to repent for your sins and change your life for God.

Uniting with God involves:
* Sorrow for Sins–Changing your life begins when you admit that Christ suffered and died for your sins.
* Spiritual Growth–Christian maturity begins when you acknowledge dependence on God. Resolve to accept and carry out His will.
* Commitment–Realize that commitment to God is more than just going to church. It involves carrying out God’s will daily, whatever the circumstances.
* Perseverance–Keep your hope and faith in Easter’s promises alive all year long, every year. Realize that Christians of every age have experienced times of testing and have overcome temptation and despair.

Poon Paregentan - 1st Sunday Card

“The Word, of the essence of the Father and co-existing with the Holy Spirit, joined His own image with our earthly nature and adorned it with glory and placed it in the garden of delight. There man joyfully exulted in gladness, for he beheld God always coming down in the garden, and his soul was filled with the radiance of the divine light.”

We are in the Garden of Eden on this day just before Lent begins on Monday (there being no Ash Wednesday in the Armenian and other Eastern churches). In the garden we live in the joy God intended for us, knowing Him face to face. It is man’s pure life, lived in the image of God.

Poon Paregentan (”joyous living”) is secondarily one last feast before the fast begins. The readings (Isaiah 58:1-14, Romans 13:11-14:25, and Matthew 6:1-21) prepare us for fasting, tell us what it is, and warn us against showing it off virtuously.

DISCLAIMER: The following may be Not Safe For Work, view at Own Risk

All of a sudden I have an urge to change my black iPod to a white one…interesting. This revealing image of Marisa Miller is sporting a video iPod and ear buds. I think that the marketing works well and is targeting a specific audience. Marketing can be controversial, but it gets its point across very well.

FYI: The song that she is listening to is “Getting The Picture” by Jimmy Buffett

Laughs erupt for Comedian Johnny Walker

Posted at: 11:40 pm by Timothy Haroutunian

Johnny WalkerPACE brought Comedian Johnny Walker as our entertainment for Winter Carnival Week. He is a comedian that also sings songs parody’s about Political Humor and other edgy subjects.

Whether he was ranting about Pakistanis in Guantanamo Bay or a song about severe ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) he had the crowd in the HUB MPR laughing throughout the show. His Natty Lite Song (tune of Satellite by Dave Matthews) was very close to the hearts in a room full of college students. Even though some of his jokes were very borderline, the response was taken well. However, there were a few jokes that some students needed to think about for a minute before more laughs were had.

Due to the fact that he was playing in New Hampshire, he wrote a song for us to the tune of Wonderland by John Mayer. “New Hampshire is a wonderland” made the crowd excited for he was talking about places and things from the state where PSU students go to school and where some of them live. In this song he sings about drinking, the “Old Man in the Mountain”, weather and other interesting material that can be used about New Hampshire.

I would highly recommend Johnny Walker for any college campus around the country. He is originally from Connecticut and currently lives in L.A.

On his myspace page, he has videos and pictures of different appearances.

This Day In History: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Posted at: 11:25 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: History and Mythology

Most people when they think of February 14th, they think of Valentine’s Day, a day of love. However, most people don’t know that in 1929 seven members of George ‘Bugs’ Moran’s gang were lined up against a wall and shot dead by members of Al “Scarface” Capone’s gang as part of a prohibition era conflict. This horrific killing was known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

St. Valentine's Day Massacre
Capone headed a list of “public enemies” corrupting the city compiled in 1930. The list was published by newspapers nationwide and Capone became known as “Public Enemy No. 1”.

Pursuing Capone were Treasury agent Eliot Ness and his hand-picked team of incorruptible U.S. Prohibition agents, “The Untouchables”, and internal revenue agent Frank Wilson of the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Internal Revenue. During a routine warehouse raid they discovered in a desk drawer what was clearly a crudely coded set of accounts. Ness then concentrated on pursuing Capone for his failure to pay tax on this substantial illegal income. This story has become a legend and the subject of books and films.

The massacre was a result of a plan devised by Capone’s gang member Jack ‘Machine Gun’ McGurn to eliminate Moran, Capone’s chief criminal enemy. The massacre was planned by McGurn partly in retaliation for an unsuccessful attempt by Frank and his brother Peter Gusenberg to murder him a month earlier while at a telephone booth. Territorial tensions between “Bugs” Moran and Al Capone about who would own the Chicago bootlegging business and make the most money from it also led Capone to accept Jack’s plan for the killings.

McGurn assembled a team of six men led by Fred Burke with the intent of having Moran lured into an ambush. Bugs and his men would be tricked into visiting a warehouse on North Clark Street on the pretext of buying some bargain hijacked bootleg whiskey; Burke’s team would then enter the building disguised as police officers and kill them. The chief architects of the plan, McGurn and Capone, would be well away from the scene.

Before any shooting had begun, Capone had placed lookouts in the apartments across the street from the warehouse. Capone, wishing to keep the lookouts inconspicuous, chose two men from another state to keep watch. Five members of the McGurn gang drove to the warehouse in a stolen police car at around 10:30 a.m., two dressed in police uniforms and three in ordinary street clothes. Moran, supposedly watching the warehouse, spotted the police car and fled. However, one of McGurn’s lookouts confused one of Moran’s men for Moran himself, and gave the signal to McGurn’s men and they approached the warehouse.

PACE & PSU bring “Tom Sartori Band”

Tom Sartori Band @ PSU
Prospect Hall serves up some good music is from The Clock (Plymouth State Newspaper) by Josh Boardman.

Avid poker fans will recognize his name from the 2005 World Series Poker tour. He finished 26th of over 5000 people and won over $300,000 in the largest poker event ever. PACE did not bring Tom Sartori to campus to show students how to play poker though. Instead he and his band came to entertain as musicians.

The band came to Plymouth State University last Saturday night to at Prospect Dining Hall. Students let out a dull roar as he played one of his popular tunes, “One More Whiskey.” Thunderous applause arose from the students, most of whom were eating their dinner in the dining hall. Many felt the band had a laid back Dave Mathews Band feel.

The performance began with Sartori and his band telling the story of how their car and trailer had flipped over only a few weeks before. Fortunately, they still made it here to play an awesome show. The attendance was small, so many missed out.

The only complaint the band had was how cold it was outside. This was surprising since most of the guys are from Buffalo, N.Y. They went on to say, though, tell that they had been in Florida for the last month. To add enjoyment of the tale, the band members described their trip to Plymouth State. Apparently, they traveled here in a white “soccer mom” minivan.

If applause was any indication, everyone loved the show. However, those who missed the show can still experience Sartori’s music at his band’s MySpace website at myspace.com/tomsartoriband.

24 Day 6: 1pm - 2pm/2pm - 3pm

Possible Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Jack took a helicopter to the ambush site and Bill informed Jack that Graem died but they don’t know all of the facts yet. Chloe had to be relieved of her duties because she was upset over Morris. Jack followed McCarthy in his silver BMW and was chasing them down the streets while they were trying to get away. Jack lost them under a bridge, during which McCarthy was trying to steal a new car. Darren McCarthy’s girlfriend killed Darren and took off to the location where Fayed said to meet with Morris. Since CTU doesn’t know about her, she will not have any problems.

President Palmer talked with Tom to make sure he was on board with his decision. Tom met with Reed to vent about the situation and Tom wanted to resign. Reed made a call to a contact to explain the situation but their intentions need Tom to stay in so that they will have clearance. CTU was trying to figure out what car McCarthy took. Bill spoke with Marilyn to tell her that Graem died from a heart attack. They found McCarthy’s body and they are trying to trace a call that he received that they think was from Fayed. Morris was taken to Fayed so that he could reprogram the bombs but Morris said that he wouldn’t do that, then they beat Morris multiple times.

Milo couldn’t get information so Chloe asked if she could try and get it. Chloe gave Jack an address for him to check. Assad meet with President Palmer and he told Assad that if one more nuclear weapon goes off, there will be no peace agreement. Wayne asked Assad to go on television and make a statement to the world and ask for information about Fayed. Jack made CTU set off the fire alarm to get everyone out of the building where Fayed was staying. Fayed took a drill and drilled into Morris’s back. Fayed then killed Darren’s girlfriend when Morris said that he would do what he asked.

Tom asked Reed if he wrote out his resignation and Reed explained a new idea that would allow Tom to stay on. Reed wanted a change in leadership and removal of President Palmer so that the Vice President could take office. Reed suggested that immediate action be taken and Tom explained that what he was implying would be considered treason. Morris was trying to program the device while CTU was ready to ambush the 6th floor where Fayed is. Morris was told to arm the nuclear weapon to see if it would work. Just as they were about to kill Morris, CTU attacked Fayed’s safe house. They secured the all of the terrorists except for Fayed. Jack was taken into the other room where the nuclear weapon was located. As Jack opened the suitcase, he informed CTU that there was a problem.

Chloe explained to Jack what he needed to do to disarm the bomb. Jack was successfully able to disarm the bomb. Morris informed Jack that Fayed may have taken the device with him and he could arm the other nuclear weapons. Tom decided that he was not going to resign and that he understood what Reed was talking about.

The helicopter carrying Fayed landed at a unknown location where the three other nuclear bombs were. CTU found an email fragment that Fayed had with Russian General Dmitri Gredenko. Jack went to talk with his father about his connection with the General. Chloe checked on Morris in the infirmary where he took responsibility for arming the bomb even though he was tortured. Phillip called a contact and told him to kill Gredenko so that his company wouldn’t be implicated. Bill asked Jack to sit down and explain the situation with Graem and how he died. Jack told Bill that he wanted his brother dead and he takes responsibility for his death.

President Palmer had a phone conversation with Vice President Noah Daniels. The VP insulted the President on his stance and Wayne told him that the conversation is over. Tom met with Reed in a secure area to talk about his plan and Reed requested Tom to consider definitive action against the President. Tom wanted to know who else is involved and Reed told him that he didn’t need to know. Reed wanted Tom to get the President’s schedule even though Reed wouldn’t explain why.

Jack met with Marilyn Bauer and she told him that she does not blame Jack, but Graem. She was trying to leave Graem for years. Jack mentioned to her that they were looking for the Russian General and she told him that Graem was going out a lot and she followed Graem to a house. Phillip started talking with Marilyn and told him about the plan with Jack. Phillip wanted to take Josh (Graem’s son) back to his house to be “safe”. Phillip made a phone call to his contact to make sure they get to the house before Jack does.

Chloe tried to convince Morris to help her with backup. Phillip called Marilyn to tell her that if she didn’t do what he asked, Josh would be dead. Phillip gave her a new location to go to and not the one that she was taking Jack to originally. Phillip took Josh to a hotel for a while but Josh knows that he is being lied to. Jack and the CTU team broke into the house and found a bomb that blew up while they were in the house, but Jack made it out. Men chased Milo and Marilyn and started chasing and shooting at them. Milo crashed into a wall and they hid behind the truck. The men stated that they need Marilyn alive. Milo put a grenade in the van and they ran away as it blew up. Jack woke up and when he realized that the truck blew up, he called for an EMT, but he didn’t realize that Milo and Marilyn weren’t inside.

AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes

AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie QuotesPart of the AFI 100 Years… series, AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes is a list of the top 100 movie quotations in American cinema. The American Film Institute revealed the list in 2005 in a three-hour television program on CBS. The program was hosted by actor Pierce Brosnan and had commentary from many Hollywood actors and filmmakers.

I know this was broad casted in 2005 but a conversation that I had with someone reminded me of it and I wanted to blog it.

Casablanca has the most quotes of any movie on the list, with six. Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz are next, with three each. Fourteen different actors, ten men and four women, each have two or more quotations attributed to them. Leading this select ensemble is Humphrey Bogart, who has five, four of them from Casablanca. Bette Davis and Vivien Leigh are tied for the most quotations by an actress, with three. Marlon Brando, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino also have three apiece. James Cagney, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Judy Garland, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gloria Swanson each have two.
