24-movie
Keifer Sutherland told MTV News that there is a script being developed to make a 24 hour day into a 2 hour feature film. It is expected to be released between Seasons 7 and 8 but takes place between seasons 6 and 7.

In an interview with MTV News in April 2006, the show’s star Kiefer Sutherland announced that a script was in development and that the film would abandon the real-time format of the show. In May 2006, Sutherland told British newspaper The Sun that shooting of the film will begin in London in May 2007. Filiming will also take place in Prague and Morocco. The film was officially announced in June 2006.

More information to come as I stumble upon it

Firefox 2 and Roaming Profiles

Posted at: 11:46 am by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Professional, Tech and Web

During the summer while ITS was facing a semi-crisis, we were trying to figure out why we were not installing Firefox on the Cluster computers throughout the Plymouth State University Campus. Zach established that Firefox stores the Cache and bookmarks in the same folder as your preferences locally on the system instead of allowing for roaming capabilities through network storage profiles.

firefox2

I was interested to find out if there was a way around this because it would be so nice to have Firefox on the cluster machines. After doing research, I found out that Firefox 1.5 did not allow for roaming profiles. Once Firefox 2 was released to the world, we checked out how it handles roaming capabilities. They changed the way the cache is stored making it very easy for us to allow for roaming.

The original location for Firefox 1.5 preferences and cache were located in
“C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{random-id}\”

With Firefox 2.0, they left the preferences in the original folder but moved the cache outside in its own folder, the following:
“C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{random-id}\”

After talking with a co-worker, using group policy and our current roaming profiles, we can prevent the cache folder from being uploaded to the server on logout. Currently we are looking into recommending to Systems that they think about adding Firefox into the cluster image.

Passwords Poor? Biometrics Better?

Posted at: 12:59 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Tech and Web

There has been debates between passwords and biometrics for which is more secure, more reliable and more useful. Well it all depends on what your purpose is for needing the security. For example, Lets say you own a small construction company that only works on building barns in Nebraska, your security risk is not that high and a password will do fine. However, what if you were head of IT for CTU (fictional Counter-Terrorist Unit on the TV show 24) and the lives of millions of people depend on the information that is stored on the servers you control. How do you think a password would handle in a situation like that.

Many people have trouble remembering their passwords so they write them down and make the concept of a password useless. That is why passwords do not cut it for security and you need to step it up to biometrics. Biometrics from Greek: bios = “life” and metron = “measure” is used to measure and analyze human physical and behavioral characteristics for authentication purposes. Here is a list of biometric examples.

biometrics_list

The figure above compares several biometrics with each other against seven categories:
* Universality describes how commonly a biometric is found in each individual.
* Uniqueness is how well the biometric separates one individual from another.
* Permanence measures how well a biometric resists aging.
* Collectability explains how easy it is to acquire a biometric for measurement.
* Performance indicates the accuracy, speed, and robustness of the system capturing the biometric.
* Acceptability indicates the degree of approval of a technology by the public in everyday life.
* Circumvention is how easy it is to fool the authentication system.
Yun ranks each biometric based on the categories as being either low, medium, or high. A low ranking indicates poor performance in the evaluation criterion whereas a high ranking indicates a very good performance.

Nobel Prize on Armenian Genocide

Posted at: 3:27 pm by Timothy Haroutunian

Turkey’s most famous writer has just been awarded the Nobel Literature Prize for speaking out about the Armenian Genocide. Orhan Pamuk, a Turkish native, questioned his country’s history and the way that the Ottoman Empire forcefully removed 1.5 Million Armenians.

He was charged with embarrassing his country and was in a year long trial for those charges. His books were burned, his pictures shredded and his life was threatened. He was considered a social outcast instead of a best selling novelist. The Turks however deny that the Genocide ever happened. Sarkis Charcasian’s parents were a few of the survivors of the death marches but with a horrible story to tell.

“Before me, she had another child…she gave birth towards early morning. In the morning the gendarmerie came and said to remove the tents. My father came out of the tent and said, ‘Well look, my wife gave birth – could we start a bit later so she can rest?’ He hit my father with a whip and said, ‘We are trying to wipe out your roots! Are you still reproducing?’ He would have been my elder brother, but he died”

It is recognized by most historians and governments around the world, except for Turkey where they have not talked about it in 90 years. The Turkish government thinks that he is trying to twist history and gain attention from the Europe and get nominated for a Nobel Prize. Their official stance is that the Armenians sided with Russia in World War I and they were the enemy and the Armenians killed just as many Turks.

Planes, Trains and Accidents (RIP Lidle)

Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle died in an airplane accident in New York City on Wednesday afternoon when a plane he was piloting crashed into a 50-story building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

lidle2

As a Red Sox fan I always wish that bad things will happen to the Yankees, but I always think of that as baseball bad luck. No matter how intense the rivalry gets and how much I think the Yankees Suck, death is something…it is terrible.

Initially, the crash sparked fears throughout New York, as the accident occurred just a few miles north of the World Trade Center. The FBI and the Dept. of Homeland Security quickly said there was no evidence it was anything but an accident. Nevertheless, within 10 minutes of the crash, fighter jets were over several cities, including New York, Washington, Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle, Pentagon officials said.

Campfire Songs Part 1

Posted at: 7:35 am by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Rants and Randomness

The following are songs that I would sing around a campfire while at Boy Scout camp and these are some of my favorites. Going to Boy Scout camp during summers was not only a great experience but a lot of fun. If you don’t agree with me, I respect your thoughts but that is why this is my blog and not yours.

Dem Bones
The lord he thought he’d make a man.
(all sing DEM BONES GONNA RISE AGAIN! after each line)
So he made Adam accordin’ to a plan.
(all – DEM BONES GONNA RISE AGAIN)
Thought he’d make a woman too.
(all – DEM BONES GONNA RISE AGAIN)
The Lord didn’t know just what to do.
(all – DEM BONES GONNA RISE AGAIN)
- Chorus

Chorus
I know it brother, I know it brother
I know it brother, Dem bones gonna rise again.

Took a rib from Adam’s side.
For to make Miss Eve, his bride.
Put ‘em in a garden wide and fair.
Told ‘em to eat what they found there.
- Chorus

Peaches, pears, plums and such.
Dem bones gonna rise again
One day Miss Eve was walking around
Spied that tree all loaded down.
- Chorus

Serpent crawling around that trunk.
At miss Eve, his eye he wunk.
Eve, she just took a little pull.
Then she filled her fig leaf full.
- Chorus

Adam, he just took a little bite.
Said ‘um um woman that sure am nice.’
One day the Lord was walkin’ around.
Spied them peels all over the ground.
- Chorus

The Lord cried out in his mighty voice.
That shook the heavens to the joists.
Cried, ‘Adam, Adam, Where art though?’
‘Here I is Lord, I’s comin’ now.’
- Chorus

‘Adam, Adam, did you eat these?’
‘No massa Lord, I ’spect it was Eve.’
Then the Lord rose up in his might wrath,
Said, ‘Ya’ll just beat it down the path.’
- Chorus

Put an angel at the door.
Said, ‘Ya’ll don’t come ’round here no more.’
Eve took the needle, Adam took the plow.
That’s why we’re all working now.
- Chorus

To this tale there ain’t no more.
Eve got the Apple, and Adam got the core.
- Chorus

Six Pence
I’ve got six pence, jolly, jolly, six pence,
I’ve got six pence, to last me all my life.
I’ve got tuppence to spend, and tuppence to lend,
And tuppence to send home to my wife (poor wive).

Chorus
No cares have I to grieve me,
No pretty little girls to deceive me. (what i need is a shower to relieve me)
I’m happy as a lark believe me, (I’m happy as a lark, blowing bubbles in the park)
As we go rolling, roling home.
Rolling home, rolling home,
By the light of the silvery moon.
Happy is the day when the staffman gets his pay, (Hey!) (…when the staff can hit the hay)
As we go rolling, rolling home.

I’ve got four pence, jolly, jolly four pence.
I’ve got four pence, to last me all my life.
I’ve got tuppence to spend, and tuppence to lend,
And no pence to send home to my wife (poor wife).

I’ve got tuppence, jolly, jolly tuppence.
I’ve got tuppence, to last me all my life.
I’ve got tuppence to spend, and no pence to lend,
And no pence to send home to my wife (poor wife).

I’ve got no sense, absolutly no sense.
I’ve got no sense, to last me all my life.
I’ve got no sense to spend, and no sense to lend,
And no sense to send home to my wife (poor wife).

Scout Vespers
Softly falls the light of day,
As our campfire fades away.
Silently each scout should ask:
“Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor birght?
Can I guitless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared,
Everything to be prepared?”
