-451 Degree Computer Chip = Fast

A super-cooled computer chip has shattered speed records for silicon-based electronics, but don’t expect your PC to hum along at 500 gigahertz anytime soon.

chip

The chip ran at -451 degrees which is about 8 degrees above Absolute Zero (-273.15 °C or -459.67°F). I don’t think that I could run my apt that cold to try it for myself. Researchers think that they are able to reach the same speeds while running it in room temp. That would be a very exciting day to run a computer with a 500 Ghz Processors considering not to long ago they started selling 500 GB Hard Drives.

The typical cell phone chip today runs at 2 GHz, while the highest-end PC microprocessors run at less than 4 GHz. John Cressler and a team of 22 scientists and graduate students forged the chip by melding silicon with atoms of the element germanium, a process so fragile that even the tiniest miscue could evaporate their work. It took researchers nine months to invent a new process to clock the chip by injecting liquid helium into a probing station. Scientists can view the process through a powerful electronic microscope zoomed to see the tiny chip, only a few thousandths of a millimeter wide. – Source CNN.com/tech

ESPN came to their senses and until July 19th, ESPN 360 is free even if you do not have a supported ISP. Take advantage of it by going: www.espn360.com. I believe it works with Internet Explorer on a PC not a MAC. if it works on others, let me know.

USA Falls to Ghana in World Cup

Posted at: 8:10 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Sports and Leisure

For those of you who saw my post on ESPN 360 flaw, most of you were able to watch the game on-line. However, if you were not able to watch it, here is the rundown

Haminu Draman opened the scoring for the Black Stars following a blunder by Claudio Reyna in the 22nd minute, before Clint Dempsey leveled the scores for in the 43rd.

The striker deprived Manchester City’s former Sunderland and Rangers midfielder off the ball and gently chipped it past ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller from 10 yards out on the left.

Dempsey then pulled one back for Ghana after Beasley had intercepted a pass in the attacking third. He chipped the ball over to the surging Dempsey, who hammered it home from 12 yards out.

A controversial penalty from Stephen Appiah just before the break proved decisive, as the USA failed to find a way back into the match.

After many injuries late in the game, Ghana was able to find the win. Unfortunately for the US, they had many chances to score in the final 10 minutes of the game and failed miserably

Synergy Software

Posted at: 4:17 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Professional, Tech and Web

Recently I picked up a MAC to put in my office at work as a second computer along with my PC. Since they were two different computers, I had two monitors with two keyboards and two mice. I didn’t want to take up that much room on my desk and after talking to a co-worker of mine, he told me about Synergy.

Synergy: [noun] a mutually advantageous conjunction of distinct elements

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).

Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all.

This is the coolest piece of software that I have seen in a long time and if you don’t like it, I will be shocked. In my office we have it running between 3 systems and there is only one keyboard and mouse for all of them.

ESPN 360 Flaw Fixed

I wrote an article yesterday called ESPN 360 Flaw which was a very big success, but last night ESPN found their flaw in the code and not only fixed it but launched a whole new Flash Based site.

To all of those who were looking forward to watching ESPN for free without having a supported ISP, well I hear you. While I’m at work I do not have access to it. I will post more if I find a way around this one…..which I don’t think will happen

UPDATE: check out this comment about how to somewhat get around the new site. Comment on ESPN 360 Fix Workaround

ESPN 360 Flaw

ESPN 360 is a website that when you are using an ISP that is supported by ESPN 360 you can download the software and then watch any sporting event that they broadcast.

There is a flaw in their code that allows you to change the URL and it doesn’t matter what ISP you are using. Vasken and I thought we would have to spoof an IP address to see if that would work or try and connect to my apt computer which is on Adelphia, but no, we just need to have some knowledge of web programming.

This is the code that their site takes you to if you are not on an ISP that is supported
http://static.espn.go.com/broadband/ebb2/360SiteRedesignStaging/index9.html?affiliate=nonaffiliate

However, Vasken and I discovered just by being educated programmers that if we passed affiliate instead of nonaffiliate that it may skip through and let you access the program to download. The Following is the code you need to enter in a browser (PC, not MAC)
http://static.espn.go.com/broadband/ebb2/360SiteRedesignStaging/index9.html?affiliate=affiliate

I am blogging about this now and then I am going to send ESPN a notice to let them know of the flaw.

UPDATE: I realized after that there is a problem when you download the application that it still requires you to contact your ISP, but if you use the Web Version, it works just fine – Timothy

Last New Student Orientation

Posted at: 12:23 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Professional, Rants and Randomness

After being an Orientation Leader for 3 summers and my final summer as a student of Plymouth State University, I am doing Orientation with ITS. Over the years, I have realized a lot about how the evolution of humans works, in a very wide sense.

helicopter-parents

Many students leave High School and they are unsure of what they plan on doing for the next few years. Some go off into the real world and get jobs, others go into the military and for most, and they go off to College ready to begin the next chapter of their lives. Are they ready? Most likely they are not, but they are willing to make the sacrifice and see where life takes them. However, there are some road blocks that are not allowing them to make their own mistakes, learn from them and grow as a person. One of the major road blocks that I have seen is not their knowledge, not their willingness to take chances, but the parents of those students.

Over the last few years, many of the parents that come with their students to Orientation have this feeling that their kid will not make it in this world without them and it is their job to protect their kids for as long as they can. Well, now is that time to pull out those scissors and cut the string, let me rephrase that, pull out the chainsaw and cut the 3 foot wide rope that they have on their children. Parents: Come September, your kids will be on their own and will not have you by their side every minute of every day. They are going to have to adapt to this change and be an adult, some for the first time in their lives. Students: Do not let your parents do everything for you because you are further participating in the deep hole that some parents can set you in.

In an article on the “The Bryan-College Station Eagle”, Family Matters section, there is an awesome article about Helicopter Parents called What Are The Latest Accessories College Students Are Bringing To School? Their Parents!

helicopter-parents2

Some parents love fighting with the people running Orientation, Orientation Leaders and even the administration to get their point across about how they need to be more knowledgeable about their son or daughters information because they pay the bills. Now that is completely understandable, but the law protects the students against that happening for a reason. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) that was established in 1974 does not allow a parent or guardian access to any information about their child unless the child gives their parents written permission. Many parents think that it is there right to know and will go on about how unbelievable the school is being, but they don’t understand that it is not a rule of the school; the federal government made it a law which the school is required to follow.

No names mentioned, but while doing orientation today for ITS, my job was to help Students log into the myPlymouth portal to make sure they were ready for the next day when they had to register for classes. When I asked one of the girls I she had logged into myPlymouth, the father spoke up and said yes. I asked her again and the father didn’t understand when he had just told me yes. The father responded by saying, “I just told you that I logged her into myPlymouth before and that she is all set.” I had explained to him that his daughter would be the one logging into the portal in the morning and not him so I wanted her to make sure she could. I told her what her username was and the protocol for the default password and when that didn’t work, the father piped up and said the following, “When I logged in as her, I changed her password for her so that she didn’t forget part of her Social Security Number.” After my mind stopped freaking out by what I had just heard, I told her that I was going to reset her password and that once she logged in the morning and registered, I suggested that she change her password to something that she would remember and that she kept private, but what I really meant was something that her parents wouldn’t know.

helicopter-parents3

I know students who have come on the first day of school, their parents left and they didn’t even know how to make their bed, do their laundry or even make a sandwich because they were sheltered as kids. Their mommies made their lunch for them everyday cut into sections, wrapped in plastic wrap and put into a paper bag. They were so dependent on their providers that they didn’t think about what college would be like. Many students are so overwhelmed with this transition that they will not do well in school, hang out with the wrong crowds and get kicked out of college all because they were not brought up in a household that required you to help out cleaning and being “independent”.

When I was in first grade, my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She couldn’t drive anymore and do a lot of the things that a mother would normally do. Now, at the time I was very upset that I needed to do things for myself because none of my other friends had to; however, I am glad that I did. I came to college prepared and ready to be an adult. I am lucky that I have two of the most caring, but knowledgeable parents when it comes to letting me go and I know they will always be there for me if I need them. While I was at my June Orientation for Plymouth, I drove up by myself a few hours earlier than they did so that I could take my Math Placement exam. When I arrived, I did not look to my parents for advice on where to go or what to do, I asked the people who would know, the Orientation Leaders. These students are very knowledgeable on what I should have been doing and were willing to help me get acclimated to the campus. I saw my parents for meals and that’s about all they were there for, and I am thankful for that. I was able to be on my own and see what it would be like to be in College before I actually arrived in September. I just pray that some of these students realize this before it is too late.

Detox Clinic for Gamers

From my perspective Video Games are really fun to play, but I don’t consider myself addicted. However, many are so addicted that they haven’t talked to another human face to face in three years.

Hyke van der Heijden, 28, a graduate of the Amsterdam program, started playing video games 20 years ago. By the time he was in college he was gaming about 14 hours a day and using drugs to play longer.

“For me, one joint would never be enough, or five minutes of gaming would never be enough,” he said. “I would just keep going until I crashed out.”

Van der Heijden first went to Smith & Jones for drug addiction in October 2005, but realized the gaming was the real problem. Since undergoing treatment, he has distanced himself from his smoking and gaming friends. He says he has been drug- and game-free for eight months.

In my opinion it is very sad when you would rather play video games than have a social life. Not to say that games aren’t fun because I love “24, The Game”, but I can get up and do stuff. If someone calls me to hang out, I can use my thumb and hit the pause button to go do, SOMETHING.

I truly do not understand how a video game can be more important than face to face social interaction. At least with Facebook, they could at somepoint see this person in real life. Most gamers communicate with people across the world, who they will never see or hear in real life and that is the difference. If a child would rather play video games that are not real than be with living humans than you may have more of a problem than just being addicted to video games. Either it can be blamed on the parents or if they are older, they have other problems that are not being addressed.

I could be the only person who feels this way, but most likly I am not

College “Survey Says”

Posted at: 10:26 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Entertainment and News, Rants and Randomness, Tech and Web

In a recent survey of college students around the country, IPOD’s ranked number 1 on students “top list” of things the enjoy at college. Shocking as it is, Beer was number 2 on the list after IPods took over. The last time Beer wasnt the number 1 item was when the internet was born and students could go on the internet at college. That is really awesome that students favor music than they do beer, which means that this will really help PACE to try and get music from the artists and have it avialable to the students.
