Snow Daze Surprise

In the process of getting everything straightened out with Recycled Percussion on Friday, February 17th, I didn’t have the chance to get anything signed from the Band as a souvenir. I was very upset because I spent months putting the show together and I didn’t have anything to show for it.

I went to my PACE meeting tonight and since I am done with everything for Snow Daze, I wasn’t on the agenda, or so I thought. Danielle, President of PACE got to the New Business Section of the Agenda and stated in front of the board that this was for me. I was confused because I didn’t know why. Danielle then mentioned that because I wasn’t able to get a Drum Stick from the performance, that she called up Recycled Percussion and had a Drum Stick signed by all the members of the band and sent to me. I was so shocked at what she had done for me that it actually brought tears to my eyes. I realized how awesome PACE is and how it is a family that cares for each other. She spent the time calling them so that I would enjoy what I really wanted.

Danielle, I love you :)

Interesting Night….PHOP what?

So I decided to go to my friend’s apt for the night and hang out with everyone that was there and have a fun night…for a change. It was snowing a lot and the roads were really bad so I walked completely across campus, long walk I know, to Merrill St. We were having a great time and everyone wanted to order food, so we called PHOP at 10:00pm because Late Night was closed. The roads were so bad that they told us it would be 1 hour. Lets skip ahead to 12:42am, over 2 ½ hours later and our food was arriving. Now, you’d expect them to tell us that our food was free, but NO, we had to pay the full price of the food, but we were hungry, so it was worth it. When we opened the boxes, the calzones were burnt and they were cold. So not only did we have to pay the full price, wait over 2 ½ hours for our food, but it was cold and burnt (which is ironic in its own way).

Its A Small World…in Plymouth

Sean and I (Vasken too) were working on a project for our System Analysis and Design class and we were looking at screen shots of Animal Shelter Software that we are trying to redesign do a complete recode of it. Anyway, Vasken went to the Animal Shelter last Saturday to take the screen shots of the existing program and sent them to me in an email. When we were looking them over, I noticed that my friend Steve’s name was on the list of customers for that day. The ironic coincidence is that Steve told me last Saturday he adopted a Cat, which was the same shelter that we are redesigning the software for. Vasken and I were completely shocked when we realized that Steve was there right before Vasken got there to take screen shots. That’s really all I wanted to say, that it is a very small world when you think of it.

College Wi-fi Cancer?

TORONTO, Ontario (Reuters) — A small Canadian university has ruled out campus-wide wireless Internet access because its president fears the system’s electromagnetic forces could pose a risk to students’ health.

Now, I hope that Plymouth doesn’t agree with this idea because that would make a lot of people mad that they didn’t have wireless anymore, especially me. I disagree with the president’s decision because of the major impact that will occur with removing wireless from students access.

“If you look at the body of science, we’re confident that there is no demonstrable health effect or effects from wireless technology,” said Robert Bradley, director of consumer and clinical radiation protection at Canada’s federal health department.

As an employee of ITS at Plymouth State, I have never heard of a wireless internet signal causing cancer. If they somehow figure that the wireless does cause cancer, every University will see major problems with students outraged from no wireless. Most students don’t see health as a factor if it allows them what they want.

Adam Krupper, president of the Lakehead students’ union, estimated about 1,000 of the school’s 7,500 students have laptops that could pick up a wireless signal, and he said students “really, really” want Wi-Fi on campus.

“Considering this is a university known for its great use of technology, it’s kind of bad that we can’t get Wi-Fi,” he said.

MySpace Photo - Arrested Teen

DENVER, Colorado (AP) — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday after postings on the popular Web site MySpace.com allegedly showed him holding handguns, authorities said.

It is ironic that I post something about MySpace and the next day someone gets arrested because they posted a photo of them that wasn’t appropriate. I’m all about looking at pictures, but people need to judge what they post before they do. If they are going to post something they shouldn’t, they will have to accept the punishment.

“The photos were very disturbing, and while the content was not a direct threat, we just felt it was important for us to take appropriate disciplinary action,” Kaufman said, adding the student could be expelled.

Evergreen High School is in the same district as Columbine High School, where two teenage gunmen killed 12 students and a teacher before committing suicide in 1999. One of the gunmen had posted a threat on the Internet before the shootings.

MySpace.com Parental Concerns

There was a report on Fox25 News that parents are having problems with their kids being on MySpace because they feel that their kids are posting to much information about themselves on their site. My feeling is that parents need to chill out and just explain to their kids what is appropriate to place online about themselves.

RFID, Sci-Fi or Reality?

Posted at: 9:16 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Entertainment and News, Professional, Tech and Web

While watching Minority Report a few years ago, I thought how interesting that technology would be to have, but I always thought it was Sci-Fi and it would be a long time before we had the technology to track people like that. About a month ago I was reading Zach’s Blog on his fears of RFID and how they are impacting our lives, NOW. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) rfid-chipis entering our lives if you like it or not.

Right now there are RFID chips on American Express Cards, in products you buy a store like Wal-mart and on your luggage tag telling the airport where you are headed. Soon they will be in Drivers Licences, Cell Phones and even your US Passports. Even though right now, the passport project is on hold, it won’t be long until it is accepted.

While talking with Zach about this, he informed me that with American Express cards, RFID has the ability to buy items just by waving it around a store if the store did not set up their hardware right. They are turning into Speedpasses, but without your permission. However, most stores are setup for passive tags which means that they can not activate the RFID tag without being within a few inches of the scanner.

I was reading an article on Network World called “RFID is really getting under people’s skin” and the FDA (Food and Drug Adminitration) approved the implanting of RFID tags into people’s skin. One of the people who are part of this study is Joseph Krull, a secuirity consultant of San Antonio.

Now officially human No. 1020000000, Krull can access his personal data stored online at VeriChip’s portal and make any changes he wants by using a reader and a PIN code. Krull elected to store his medical information and address, phone numbers, fax and e-mail at the Web site.

I want to know how people can actually agree with this idea. So far, everyone that I have talked to about it is against the idea of people being able to track our personal information through a piece of plastic, never mind, well, a person.

Check back about RFID in my blog, because I am writing a research paper for my Computer Security Class and this is my topic

New Nickel

Matt and I were wondering about the symbolism behind the New Nickel and what the meaning of “Ocean in View! O! The joy!” on the back of the Nickel. This is from the US Mint website

2005 Summer/Fall Reverse Design: “Ocean in view! O! The joy!”

2005 Nickel Reverse: In late 2005, the nickel will feature a scene of the Pacific Ocean and an inscription reflecting an excited entry in the journal of Captain William Clark on November 7, 1805. The design – a design based on a photograph by Andrew E. Cier of Astoria, Oregon – visually depicts the expedition’s exultation on believing they had finally reached the Pacific Ocean after so many months of arduous travel. View Mr. Cier’s photograph here. The design was created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist, Joe Fitzgerald, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and was sculpted by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver.

PS3 Delayed

PS3 may be delayed from its release due to the fact that they are waiting on certain aspects of technology and for the price to go down. The current price they are looking at is $900

“We’re aiming for spring, but we haven’t announced specific regions,” a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment said, adding that it was waiting for the final specifications on some of the technology it is using in the PS3, such as that related to the Blu-ray DVD drive and to input and output video and sound.

Fire and Ice Dance for Snow Daze

Posted at: 11:43 pm by Timothy Haroutunian
Categories: Rants and Randomness

For my last event for Snow Daze, we had a Fire and Ice Semi Formal Dance in which everyone had to come dressed up for a semi formal dance. Everyone liked it and we brought Derek Cram of Jam Man Entertainment. It was a lot of fun and a nice way to end Snow Daze. I am not going to write too much more about this.
